Description
The biggest difference between the military and civilian versions is in their shooting modes. While the military-grade version has four shooting modes: safe, semi-automatic, two-shot burst and fully automatic; the civilian-grade version has only two: safe and semi-automatic. This was done according to the Russian Federation’s weapon laws and can’t be ‘manually’ fixed in your backyard.

The second big difference is also involves the weapon’s firing system. A person won’t be able to use an AK TR-3 rifle and fire at a target with a shoulder stock adjusted to a side; this is only possible with the military-grade version. This is also a safety precaution protected by law.

The third difference is the weapons’ calibers. A military AK-12 has two caliber options: 5,45×39 mm and 7,62×39 mm. A civilian-grade version can only use a 7,62×39 mm caliber.

Variants
The basic feature of the new rifle is its modularity. It will serve as a basic platform for designing of over 20 modifications of small-arms weapons of various purposes and caliber.
AK-12 Kalashnikov Military Technical Data
Design
AK-12 Kalashnikov Military assault rifle is a gas-operated, selective fire weapon using traditional type action with long-stroke gas piston and rotary bolt locking as a standard Kalashnikov assault rifle. Firing selector levers are located above the pistol grip, at both sides of the rifle. The AK-12 features three firing modes: single shot, three-shot burst and automatic fire. The muzzle of the AK-12 has been designed to shoot foreign-standard barrel-mounted grenades. The AK-12 is fitted with a new hinged top cover. The cover is a lot more rigid than the previous AK rifles. The weapon can be used by both left-handed and right-handed people and can be easily handled with one hand. The weight of the new AK-12 assault rifle is around 3.3 kg.
Ammunition
The AK-12 will be chambered in the traditional 7.62x39mm and 5.45x39mm calibers and available in NATO’s 5.56x45mm as well. It has been reported that all AK-47/AKM magazines will work with the AK-12.
Accessories
The AK-12 assault rifle is also fitted with Picatinny rails at the top of the weapon and additional accessory rails at both sides to mount optical, and night sights, grenade launchers, target indicators and other special equipment. The AK-12 has a folding stock and a height-adjustable heelpiece.
